Coronavirus - information for Student and Tier 4 visa holders

Keep up to date with any relevant immigration advice during the coronavirus outbreak. Updated 10/12/2021

Immigration guidance

Full guidance for students on a visa is available and sets out temporary policy concessions for Sponsors and students in response to the outbreak of Covid-19. Please read the immigration guidance carefully and take action if needed. If you have any questions, or need any support with this, please contact us by email.

The University is also providing updated advice to students regarding the coronavirus outbreak and quarantine arrangements.

Studying remotely

If you are studying remotely or if you are leaving the UK to return home to do so (at any time throughout 2021/22), you do not need to contact SIS and you do not need to submit an authorised absence, however you must submit the form on SAMIS to request remote study and state your expected arrival date for on-campus learning, after any quarantine period has ended.

Please refer to the University of Bath's dedicated remote study page to ensure you follow the correct steps.

All students

If you have a Student visa to study in the UK, you are expected to be in the UK as soon as is practical.

Remote learning is not normally permitted on a Student or Tier 4 visa and students holding these visas are required to be in the UK and attend study sessions in person as soon as their course starts. However, students who are not able to come to the UK due to Covid-19 are permitted under current UKVI concessions to study online until their circumstances allow them to do so (and by 30 June 2022 at the latest).

Travelling to the UK

Before you travel to the UK, please read the Government guidance and the border measures carefully as you may need to quarantine for 10 days on arrival in the UK.

The UK Government has recently updated this guidance to specify which countries will not need to quarantine on arrival in the UK.

We recommend you familiarise yourself with our up-to-date information on quarantine and support provided.

Police Registration

The Avon and Somerset Police registration offices are all open and appointments are now available, but some restrictions may be in place at some of these offices. When attending an appointment, please remember that you will be required to wear a face mask during the appointment.

Please ensure you register with the Police and book your appointment online as soon as you can, whether you are a new student or already registered with the Police but need to notify them of a change of circumstances.

Important: if no appointments are available, you will be issued with an acknowledgement. It is important that you should keep a record of this acknowledgement.

Students who have already registered with the police and are making a new application in the UK should submit their Police Registration Certificate along with any other documents in support of their application as normal.

Starting your studies

We may allow you to start your studies before your visa application has been decided if:

  • we have assigned you a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
  • you submitted your application before your current visa expired and has shown us evidence of this (if you are currently in the UK)
  • the course you start is the same as the one listed on your CAS
  • you have a valid Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate if required
  • you are starting your studies remotely from your home country

Visa applications and extensions

When travel restrictions lift globally, you will be expected to be able to extend your visa as you would under "normal" circumstances, unless exceptional circumstances prevent you from doing so, and consequently take all reasonable steps to leave the UK where it is possible to do so or apply to regularise your stay in the UK.
